Alternative assets market
Alternative assets encompass a large variety of different things from fine wines to collectible watches. We visualise what the market looks like below, and it is clear to see that private equity makes up almost half of the whole market at 49.6%. So what is private equity? It is investing or acquiring private companies that are not listed on the public stock exchange, usually in the hopes of seeing returns greater than can be achieved in public equity markets.

Most expensive painting sold
Fine art is becoming an increasingly popular alternative asset, especially considering the fact that it is largely unaffected by the performance of financial markets. Salvator Mundi by Leonardo Da Vinci is currently the most expensive painting to ever be sold. It was bought at auction and the likely owner is the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman. Since the sale, it has not been seen publicly and its whereabouts are unknown.
Share of investors likely to increase allocation to alternative investments
The future trends for alternative assets look to remain fairly similar to the current market, with private equity leading the way. Hedge funds and real estate are also in the same respective positions as the current market. Alternative assets certainly seem to be gaining interest among investors, and in fact according to Nuveen’s EQuilibrium institutional investor survey, 72% of investors plan to increase private asset and alternative investment allocations in 2023. These investment strategies are being considered and implemented in the hopes of mitigating portfolio volatility and hedging against inflation.
