Apple Overtakes Samsung in Smartphone Market
iPhones Became the best-selling smartphone series in 2023
Despite the overall challenges faced by the global smartphone market, 🍎Apple demonstrated resilience and emerged as the leader in 2023 with the highest number of iPhone shipments.
Apple Overtakes Samsung for the First Time
In 2023, Apple shipped 234.6 million iPhones, capturing a market share of 20.1% and experiencing a year-over-year growth of 3.7%, according to IDC data. In the fourth quarter of 2023, Apple even obtained a quarter of the market share. Prior to this year, Samsung had held the top position in global smartphone unit sales for 13 years, since 2010.
In 2023, the top five companies in terms of smartphone shipments are Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, and Transsion. Outside the top five, Huawei made a major comeback in its home market, driven by the new Mate series.
Challenging Global Smartphone Market
According to Canalys’ latest research, worldwide smartphone shipments grew 8% year on year in the Q4 of 2023, reaching 320 million units. This ended seven consecutive quarters of decline. 🍎Apple emerged as the market leader in the fourth quarter, capturing a 25% share of shipments, largely attributed to the successful launch of new iPhone models.
But for full-year 2023, global smartphone shipments reached 1.1 billion units, a 4% decrease from the previous year. This marks the lowest full-year volume in a decade, driven largely by macroeconomic challenges and elevated inventory early in the year.

Unit sales of the iPhone worldwide from 2007 to 2022
While the iPhone has secured the largest market share this year., the iPhone sales for 2023 fell slightly below expectations.
Part of this decline is due to certain Chinese government agencies prohibiting employees from using iPhones in the workplace. This development is significant for Apple as the "greater China" region accounted for 19% of its total revenue in fiscal year 2023, and sales in that region declined by 2.2% compared to fiscal year 2022.
🤔Vision Pro is set to launch in early February 2024. Can this new device help boost Apple's sales performance?
