Seafood dishes can range from the basic student meal of a tuna pasta bake to a $150 piece of sushi. But how much fish and seafood actually gets caught per year?
Global aquaculture market value
The value of the fishing market has grown worldwide, from $204B in 2020 to an estimated $262B by 2026. This has in part been driven by population growth (more people = more mouths to feed) and advancements in aquaculture techniques and technologies, but also consumer trends in meat-free diets favouring the consumption of more fish and shellfish.

Who fishes the most?
Five of the top 10 fishing nations are in Asia, with China way ahead of the rest catching almost 12 million tons of fish in 2020. Understandably, these countries count many seafood dishes among their specialities, with famous examples including sushi (Japan) and ceviche (Peru). Interestingly, despite the continent of Africa having 38 coastal states and a few island states on top, its highest ranked country on this list is Morocco in 17th place with a capture production of 1.5 million tons.
World aquaculture production
The world collectively produced over 120 million tonnes of aquaculture in 2020, according to a report by the FAO. The top most-produced category of aquaculture was freshwater fish, with the biggest group of species being cyprinids. Examples of cyprinids include carps and minnows, but also the ever-popular goldfish.
The production of freshwater fish far outweighed that of both marine and diadromous fish combined (diadromous fish like salmon spend part of their lifecycle in freshwater and part in saltwater), with the second-largest category being algae - split almost equally into brown and red seaweeds.
