Today’s newsletter is about population demographics. We explore which countries around the world have the largest ageing populations. Also, we visualise gender ratios and also investigate why particular countries have such disparities in the number of men and women. Finally, which countries have the most immigrants as a percentage of their population.
Largest ageing populations
Japan stands out with one of the largest and most rapidly ageing populations. The phenomenon presents various challenges such as an increased strain on healthcare systems, pension programs, and social services. Several European countries including Germany and Italy also face similar demographic trends. These nations are actively seeking innovative solutions to address the economic, social, and healthcare implications of an ageing population, including promoting active ageing, encouraging immigration, and investing in technology to support elderly citizens.

Ratio of men to women around the world
The top countries (Qatar, UAE, and Bahrain) are all in the Middle East, and have encouraged immigration mainly from South Asian countries to provide manual labour. As a result, there is a large imbalance between the number of men to women. The countries with the lowest number of men to women are largely former Soviet nations. A lot of these men left for war and died, and the effects of this are still being felt today.
Largest immigrant populations
Vatican City has the largest immigrant population in the world, however this is of course a unique case. Gulf countries once again feature on this list due to the large number of predominantly South Asian immigrant workers that contribute to their economy. The majority of immigrants in Tokelau were born in either Samoa or New Zealand.
