Today’s newsletter is all about the shift to renewable energy. We start off by looking at who the largest corporate purchasers are of clean energy, and how much they purchased during 2022. Furthermore, we then visualise how countries around the world are doing in terms of renewable electricity generation per capita. Finally, which countries have pledged to phase out coal power? Some are already coal-free, whilst others have no pledges at all.
Largest corporate purchasers of clean energy
Amazon is the largest corporate purchaser of clean energy in 2022 at 12,415MW. They are closely followed by other large tech companies such as Meta, Google, and Microsoft. This energy is usually purchased for purposes such as powering their data centres, offices, and factories. This trend of transitioning to clean energy is expected to continue as Amazon has invested in 18 wind and solar power projects in the US alone.

Renewable electricity generation per capita
We take a look at which countries are generating the most renewable energy. The visualisation breaks this down to per capita so that comparisons can be more easily made between countries. The country in top spot for 2022 was Iceland, generating 53,916kWh per capita. They lead by quite a large margin, as Norway in second place is only at 27,807kWh, approximately half of Iceland.
Phasing out coal power
Coal power is a non-renewable energy source, along with the likes of oil and gas. In addition, it is actually the most polluting out of the three and emits more carbon dioxide per unit of energy than any other fossil fuel. Therefore, these pledges are so important, however there are a large number of countries that have not committed to phasing out coal, including large names such as the US and China.

It's great to see so much interest in this area. I love your graphics. The best way to accelerate the transition away from fossil fuels is a carbon tax: https://www.lianeon.org/p/the-key-to-a-sustainable-economy
If we can place a small tax that would counter the negative externalities of burning fossil fuels, companies and households would switch much more readily than they are now.
